You asked three developers for a quote and got three prices that look like they belong to three different projects. One is so low it feels risky. Another is so high you wonder what you are paying for.
Website development cost in India swings this much because "a website" can mean a five-page brochure or a full online shop with payments and stock. This guide shows what each part of a quote pays for, which costs come back every year, and how to compare quotes line by line.
Quick answer
What decides website development cost in India?
Five things set the build price: the pages and features, the design, a CMS for editing, online selling, and links to other tools. Content and GST come on top. After launch, you pay every year for the domain, hosting and upkeep.
Here is a simple map of what pushes a quote up.
| Cost driver | What it means | Price goes up when |
| Pages | Home, About, Services, Contact and so on | You need many unique page layouts. |
| Design | The look of the site | It is drawn from scratch, not from a template. |
| CMS | An admin panel to edit text and photos yourself | You need custom fields, roles or approvals. |
| Online selling | Cart, payments, orders, stock | You have many products, sizes or price rules. |
| Integrations | Links to payment gateways, WhatsApp, booking, a CRM | Each extra tool needs setup and testing. |
| Content | Text, photos, product details | The developer has to write or shoot it. |
| Yearly costs | Domain, hosting, maintenance | You want fast hosting, backups and support. |
Pages and features
Ten pages that all share one layout are quicker to build than five pages that each look different. A contact form is small. A form that saves leads, emails your team and sends a WhatsApp alert is three jobs, not one.
Write down every feature you want before you ask for quotes. If two developers quote on different lists, you cannot compare them.
Template design or custom design
A template is a ready-made design the developer adjusts with your logo, colours and photos. A custom design is drawn for your business first, then built. Custom costs more, but nobody else will have the same site.
For a new shop or clinic, a good template is often enough. Custom design starts to pay back when your brand and your customer's first look really matter.
A CMS so you can edit it yourself
A CMS (content management system) is the admin panel where you change text, prices and photos without calling the developer. Without one, every small change becomes a paid request. Ask to see the admin panel before launch, and ask for a short video on how to use it.
Online selling and e-commerce
An online shop needs a product list, a cart, a payment gateway (the service that takes card and UPI payments), order emails and stock updates. Each of these needs testing. Returns, coupons, delivery zones and GST invoices add more work.
What do integrations add?
An integration links your site to another tool. Examples are a booking calendar, WhatsApp, or a CRM (the list where you track enquiries). Every link has to be set up, tested and fixed when the other tool changes.
Content: the cost most people forget
Someone has to write the pages and take or pick the photos. Many low quotes assume you will send all of it. If you are busy, a site can sit unfinished for weeks while the developer waits for your text.
Static vs dynamic website: why the price differs
A static website shows the same pages to every visitor, and a developer changes them for you. A dynamic website pulls content from a database, so it can have an admin panel, logins, saved forms and live stock. Dynamic sites take more work to build, host and keep updated, so they cost more.
A static site is fine for a business that rarely changes its pages. If you post new products, offers or blog posts every week, you need something dynamic with a CMS.
Custom build, WordPress or Shopify: how the costs compare
The platform you pick changes both the build cost and the yearly bill. The table shows where the money goes with each one.
| Option | What you pay for | Good fit |
| WordPress | The software is free and open source. You pay for hosting, any paid theme or plugins, and the developer's time. | Content sites, blogs, service businesses |
| Shopify | A monthly plan to Shopify, plus setup and design work. Basic is ₹1,994 a month, or ₹1,499 a month paid yearly (Shopify India pricing page, as of October 2026). | Shops that want selling tools ready from day one |
| Custom build | The developer's time to build it, plus hosting. No platform fee. | Special workflows, bookings, dashboards, unusual rules |
With Shopify you keep paying the monthly plan for as long as the shop is open. Add a year of it before you compare it with a WordPress or custom quote.

What yearly costs come after launch?
A website keeps costing money after it goes live. Plan for three yearly costs: the domain name, the hosting, and maintenance. Ask every developer to list these separately from the build price, so you know your real bill for the second year.
Domain name
The domain is your web address, like yourshop.in. The .in registry is run by NIXI, which the Government of India has authorised as the .IN registry since January 2005. You buy the name through an accredited registrar, which is a company approved to sell it.
NIXI's registry says .in names are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. So renew on time, and turn on auto-renew if your registrar offers it.
Ask the developer to register the domain with your own email ID and in your own name, not theirs. Many owners only find out this went wrong when the developer stops replying.
Hosting
Hosting is the rented computer your website lives on. Cheap shared hosting can be slow when many sites share one machine. Ask where the site will be hosted, who pays the bill, and whose account it is in.
Maintenance
Maintenance covers software updates, security fixes, backups and small edits. WordPress sites need plugin updates often. Ask what is included each year and what counts as a new, paid change.
Is GST added to a website development quote?
Yes. Website and software development falls under SAC 998314, "Information technology design and development services".
This service attracts 18% GST: 9% CGST plus 9% SGST inside your state, or 18% IGST if the developer is in another state. The September 2025 GST rate changes did not change this.
So a quote that says "plus GST" will cost you 18% more than the number on it. Ask for a proper GST tax invoice, and show it to your accountant.
How to get a website quote you can compare
A good quote is a written list, not one number. It is the only fair way to compare website development cost in India across developers. Use these steps so every developer quotes on the same thing.
- Write one page about your business: what you sell, who buys, and what the website must do.
- List every page and feature, including forms, payments, bookings and languages.
- Say who will write the text and provide the photos.
- Ask each developer for a line-by-line quote: design, build, content, integrations, and yearly costs.
- Ask how payment is split. Paying in parts tied to finished work is safer than paying everything in advance.
- Ask in writing who will own the domain, the hosting account and the code at the end.

A closing note
When you compare website development cost in India, the cheapest quote often leaves out content, yearly costs or ownership. You pay for those later. The best quote is the one that lists everything and puts your business name on the domain and the code.
