How to Hire a Next.js Development Company

Hiring a Next.js development company? Learn what Next.js gives your business, the questions to ask before you sign, and red flags that cost owners later.

Three agencies have sent you quotes, and all of them say "we build in Next.js". It sounds modern, but it tells you nothing about whether they will deliver on time, hand over your accounts, or fix things two years from now.

This guide is for a founder or business owner hiring a Next.js development company. It covers what Next.js actually gives you, what to check before you sign, and the warning signs that cost owners money after launch.

Quick answer

Next.js is a free, open-source framework made by Vercel for building websites and web apps with React.
It suits shops, booking sites and platforms that need Google visibility plus server work like payments, logins and forms.
The framework is the easy part. Judge a company on live work, update habits, and who owns the accounts.
Ask which Next.js version they will use. As of October 2026, only versions 16 and 15 still get security fixes.
Get a written plan for updates after launch, not just a build quote.

Why use Next.js for a business website?

Next.js lets one team build your public pages and the server side behind them in one project. Pages can be prepared in advance so they open fast, while forms, payments and logins run on the server. For a business, that means fewer separate systems to pay for and look after.

One project for pages and server work

Next.js describes itself as "a React framework for building full-stack web applications". Full-stack means it covers both what visitors see and the work done on the server, such as saving an enquiry or checking a payment.

For HRDYAM, a platform for pilgrimage tours, astrology consultations and a spiritual products store, we built on Next.js 16. One payment flow there connects six outside services, including Cashfree for payments, Firebase, Sanity and Zoho CRM.

Content that updates without a full rebuild

Next.js has a feature called Incremental Static Regeneration, or ISR. In plain words, pages are prepared ahead of time, and Next.js refreshes them in the background when your content changes. Its docs say this lets you "update static content without rebuilding the entire site".

On YUMI's online store, pages refresh every hour this way. Headlines, images and FAQs live in 18 config files, so the team can change them without a code release.

Is Next.js good for SEO?

Yes, for the technical part. Next.js can create each page's title, description, sitemap (a list of your pages for Google) and robots.txt (rules for search bots) from built-in files. That removes setup work, but content and reputation still decide where you appear.

So treat SEO claims with care. A company that says Next.js alone will bring traffic is selling the framework, not the result, and nobody can promise you a position on Google.

Next.js advantages, and what to watch

Every tool has a cost side. This table puts the main Next.js advantages next to the question each one should raise for you.

AdvantageWhat it means for youWhat to ask
Server and pages in one projectFewer separate systems to hostWhere will the server part run, and on whose account?
Built-in image toolRight-sized photos for phonesIs it switched on for every product photo?
ISR content refreshFast pages that stay currentHow long until my edits show on the site?
Works with a CMS or ShopifyYou can edit text and stock yourselfWhich admin panel will I use?
Regular releasesNew features and security fixesWho updates the site, and how often?

The hosting question

Next.js can run on a Node.js server, in a Docker container, as static files, or on platforms such as Vercel, AWS Amplify and Firebase App Hosting. Static files are the cheapest to host, but the Next.js docs say server features do not work that way.

YUMI runs on Vercel and HRDYAM on AWS Amplify, because each project had different needs. A good company explains why it picked yours, and what it will cost each month.

What to check before you hire a Next.js development company

Use these checks in order. A good company will answer each one in writing without fuss.

  1. Ask for two or three live websites they built in Next.js, and open them on your own phone.
  2. Ask which Next.js version they will start on. Next.js 16 is in Active LTS and 15 in Maintenance LTS; versions before 15 no longer get fixes.
  3. Ask who installs security updates after launch, how fast, and what it costs per month or per incident.
  4. Ask for the domain, hosting and code repository (the online folder that holds your code) to be opened in your company's name and email.
  5. Ask for a written scope: pages, features, the admin panel, and what counts as a change request.
  6. Ask what happens if they stop working with you: how you get the code, the passwords and a short handover note.

Keep their written answers with the contract. If something goes wrong a year later, you will want proof of what was agreed, not a memory of a phone call.

Why the update question matters

On 3 December 2025, the React team announced a flaw in React Server Components rated 10.0 out of 10 for severity. It allowed attackers to run code on the server, and Next.js apps using the App Router were affected.

Next.js told all users to upgrade to a patched version immediately, and to change their secret keys if they had been online unpatched. A site with nobody assigned to updates would have stayed open to that attack.

If you want to see how one team answers these questions, read about The Beyond Horizon's web app development service and compare it with the other quotes on your desk.

Red flags when hiring a Next.js developer

Most problems show up before the contract is signed. Watch for these signs in the first two meetings.

They cannot show a single live Next.js site, only screenshots or templates.
They want to host everything on their own account "to make it easier".
The quote has one total and no list of pages or features.
They promise a top Google position or a fixed number of sales.
There is no answer to "who updates this next year?"
They plan to start on an old version, such as 13 or 14, for a brand new project.

A small tip most first-time buyers miss

Ask for a staging site: a private copy of your website where you can check changes before they go live. YUMI runs on separate production and staging setups, so new work is tested away from customers.

It costs a little more to set up, but it stops a broken update from reaching people who are trying to buy from you.

How much does a Next.js development company charge?

There is no fixed rate, and any honest company will ask questions before giving you a number. The price depends on the scope of the work, not on the framework, because Next.js itself is free under the MIT licence.

What drives the price

The main cost drivers are the number of page types, custom design work, and outside services such as payments, CRM or shipping. Each added service brings setup and testing time.

Other drivers are an admin panel for your team, content writing and photos, and the monthly hosting plan. Ask for each one as a separate line, so you can drop or delay items instead of cutting quality.

Also ask whether the quote covers anything after launch. Some quotes cover only the build, and the first month of fixes, hosting and updates then arrives as a surprise bill.

Your next step

Before you choose, send each shortlisted company the six checks above and compare the written answers. The Beyond Horizon has delivered 40+ projects, including Next.js platforms like HRDYAM and YUMI, and will answer each of these checks in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Next.js built on React?

Yes. You build the screens with React components, and Next.js adds page addresses, server rendering, image handling and the build setup around them.

Was Next.js built by Vercel?

Yes. Next.js is maintained by Vercel and published as open source under the MIT licence, so you can host it with Vercel or with other providers.

Who are Next.js' main competitors?

React's own docs list other ways to start a React project, such as React Router (v7) for full-stack web apps and Expo for Android, iOS and web apps. Which one fits depends on the project, so ask your developer why they picked theirs.
