You asked two developers to quote for an AI agent and got two numbers that look like they came from different planets. Neither quote explains the monthly bill that comes after launch. You want to know what you are really paying for before you sign.
This guide breaks AI agent development cost into the parts you can check yourself. It covers what drives the build price, where bills grow, and what AI companies charge per token as of October 2026. It gives no made-up price ranges, because we found no reliable public source for them.
Quick answer
What decides AI agent development cost?
AI agent development cost is mostly people's time: planning, connecting your systems, writing rules, testing and fixing. There is no standard price list, because two agents with the same name can do very different amounts of work. The drivers below explain most of the gap between quotes.
Build cost drivers
Six things explain most of the difference between two quotes for the same idea.
| Driver | Why it raises the cost | How to keep it down |
| Number of systems connected | Each system (billing, CRM, WhatsApp, email) needs its own tool and testing | Start with one or two systems |
| State of your data | Scanned papers and messy sheets must be cleaned first | Clean one source before the build starts |
| Read-only or able to act | Actions like refunds need approval screens and more safety checks | Start read-only, add actions later |
| Testing depth | Risky tasks need many more test cases | Collect real past cases yourself |
| Channels and languages | Each channel and language adds testing | Launch on one channel first |
| Approval and reporting screens | Someone has to build the screen where staff review the agent | Use a simple review list at first |
Anthropic's own guide warns that agents bring "higher costs, and the potential for compounding errors". So a simpler fixed workflow, where the steps are set in advance, often costs less to build and run. Ask whether your task needs a full agent at all.
What does an AI agent cost to run?
The running cost is what the AI provider charges each time the agent reads and writes text. Providers bill per token, and a token is roughly 4 characters or 0.75 of a word in English, according to Anthropic. Every question, every document the agent reads and every reply adds tokens.
Official per-token prices, as of October 2026
These are standard prices in US dollars per million tokens, copied from Anthropic's and OpenAI's official pricing pages on 1 October 2026. Input is what you send to the AI. Output is what it writes back, and it costs more.
| Provider | Model | Input (per 1M tokens) | Output (per 1M tokens) |
| Anthropic | Claude Opus 5.5 | US$4 | US$20 |
| Anthropic | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | US$2 | US$10 |
| Anthropic | Claude Haiku 4.5 | US$1 | US$5 |
| OpenAI | gpt-6-astra | US$10 | US$50 |
| OpenAI | gpt-6.1-sol | US$2 | US$10 |
| OpenAI | gpt-6-luna | US$0.10 | US$0.50 |
Both pages also list a batch option at half price for work that does not need an instant reply. Both charge US$10 per 1,000 web searches on top of tokens. OpenAI's page lists higher prices for very long requests.
A worked example
Say one customer enquiry uses about 3,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens. On Claude Sonnet 5.5, that is 3,000 x US$2 plus 500 x US$10, divided by one million. The total is about US$0.011 per enquiry, before tool fees and hosting.
Anthropic's pricing page gives its own example. About 10,000 support tickets of roughly 3,700 tokens each, on Claude Haiku 4.5, cost about US$37 in total.
Treat these as rough guides, not a promise. Real usage depends on how long your documents and conversations are, and token counts vary by language.
Model versions matter too. Anthropic notes that Claude 4.7 and later models use a newer tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text. So when a developer compares two models, ask them to test both on your real messages, not just compare price tables.
Why agent bills grow after launch
Agents cost more than a simple chatbot because one task can take many steps. Each step is another call to the AI, and each call resends the instructions, the tool list and the conversation so far.
Hidden running costs to plan for
Anthropic's pricing page says all payments are in US dollars. If you pay by card from India, check what your bank adds for foreign currency payments, because that charge lands on every monthly bill.
Ways to keep running costs low
- Use a smaller model for simple steps. Anthropic suggests Haiku for simple tasks, Sonnet for most production work and Opus for the hardest reasoning.
- Use prompt caching, where the provider stores repeated text so later calls cost less. Both pricing pages list cheaper rates for cached input.
- Send non-urgent jobs, such as overnight reports, through the batch option.
- Set a limit on how many steps the agent may take for one task.
- Read the usage report every week for the first month.

Are AI agents for business worth the cost?
An agent is worth it only if the work it takes over costs you more than the build plus the running bill. Nobody can promise that in advance. A small test on one task, with real numbers, is the only honest way to find out.
Write down how many hours a month your team spends on the task today, and what a mistake costs you. Then compare that with the quote and the per-task running estimate. If the numbers are close, a fixed workflow or better software may be the safer choice.
AI automation for small business: start with one task
Pick one task with clear rules and many repeats, like sorting enquiries or drafting standard replies. Keep a person approving the output at first. Grow only after the first task works on real cases.
How to choose an AI agent development company
A good AI agent development company explains its quote line by line and names the model it plans to use. It also tells you the expected running cost per task, not just the build price.
Ask these questions before you pay anything:
- Is the quote fixed, and is it based on a written scope?
- Which AI model will you use, and what is the expected cost per task?
- Will the AI account, API key and billing be in my company's name?
- How will you test it, and can I bring my own past cases?
- Which actions need a person's approval?
- What happens when the provider retires the model? Both Anthropic and OpenAI publish lists of retired models.
One warning: never let a developer run your agent on their own AI account and bill you a markup you cannot see. If the account is yours, you see every rupee of usage and keep control if you change developers.
Your next step
Pick one task, count the hours it takes each month, and collect a few dozen past examples. With those, any developer can give you a quote you can check. To go through it with us, call or WhatsApp The Beyond Horizon on +91 75973 92744.
